Photography by Joel Akin

Photography became a dream for me when I was a kid. I was into taking pictures when I was seven with my Secret Sam Kit given to me by my parents at Christmas time. It was probably the coolest gift I had received. It was a brief case that shot plastic bullets and had a spy hole you could use to take pictures. I actually used it and somewhere out there are a couple photos.

That was my first camera. My second one came about in a mysterious manner. I was rooming with a friend of mine in college named Dale Bradley. He showed me a camera he had in his drawer and I was so fascinated by it I wanted to stare at it for hours. It had gizmo's and gadgets on it I'd never seen before. He put it away and I was so intent on seeing it again I did something I regretted. I went and pulled out the camera to look at it the moment Dale stepped back into the house. He had forgotten something. I was left standing there with the camera in my hands. He never said anything and I never had any evil intent but I never did that again.

But I did move to Canada and found a neighbor with a camera for sale. I don't remember much about it except it became my source of joy in college my final year when I became a photographer for the college yearbook. My photography days ended though when I was taking a picture of Miss America only a few feet away and the camera froze up and died. She said hi to me and all I remember and mourning over the loss of my camera and feeling very exposed with out it.

After college I purchased a Nikon and went out and became a slide man. I put together various shows of various trips and people seemed to like them and wanted more.

Sometime in the 90's I put the camera away when my health declined and prices rose on developing film. Eventually I realized life was passing me by and I went out and purchased a Digital camera. That was about 3-4 years ago I guess. So I hope you enjoy life from the perspective of my camera. 15/10/2006
