Last days of Pompeii

June 8, 2005

Now it so happened there was a little village on the Outskirts of Pompeii called La Plaza de la Maya. This little village had an average attendance at the local coliseum of 4,000. The Coliseum was a place where people attended shows, watched lions tear apart rotted corps and all kinds of gory things not meant for the average bear. It was a little place though next to La Plaza which held the brightest little star of all. A young woman lived there who was just an average girl. She didn't have much going for her beyond her average looks. She wasn't exceptionally bright nor smart nor rich. But she had one thing above all things that made her a bright star. Her kindness.

The kindness of Lontit as she was called had no frontal lobe which meant she was born simple minded. She had a long furrow around the back of her head where she was branded and marked as simple and unfit for having children. It wasn't a kind thing to do but a wise thing for the day as children born to such people tended to have many abnormalities. It isn't perhaps a happy thought for our day but such was the cast back then that few argued it or fought against it.

I do not argue for the cast system as it labelled people with its childish natures that everyone wanted the system disbanded. Its true there were those who argued for it but no one understood the consequences of it more then those enslaved by it. I guess you could call them Laslava people for that was their true nature. Laslava was a unique term meant to deter the upper class from gaining too much power. Laslava were the lower caste of their day but they had authority in the senates and court systems. I guess one might call them wise for their understanding of the cast offs but few wanted them to wear the logo of knowledge which they wore as brands.

Lontit had no one to support her but she had one good things going for her. Her willingness to fight for what she believed in. We often take the disabled for granted. They are people who have suffered intensely yet despite overwhelming odds they have come back to fight another day. Having been one myself I know the pain and suffering one can go through. It is hard and degrading as others treat you as second class citizens or slaves.

Lontit had no problem making friends. She was one of those young women who had a knack for opening people up and getting them to understand themselves.

She was smart in her own way. You might call her a savant of her day in several areas. First was her musical aptitude and the second her knack with people. She had a flute she used to play and she created songs with it that made people cry. Her favorite song she played was called The Flute of the Winds. It was a song about a man who journeyd to the far side of the world and found love on the far shores of a lake. It was a big lake and few explored it but they learned of a deep curse that swallowed ships whole. The explorer was lost in it and was carried to a secret land where he learned how to hold battle against impossible monsters and creatures. The explorer battled great beasts until finally one day he realized he had conquered all of them and there were no more left. He escaped from the cursed land and found his way to the distant shores of the big lake where his true love awaited. But she had grown old and died for the enchanted land had faded and taken his memory. He was sorrowful and full of anger and wrath and wanted to curse the gods. But he swore that instead he would never love women again. When he returned to his home he found that there too all mention of his name had been stolen and lost and the home where he was born Lontiktik had been erased by the volcanic belches of La Pompeii.

He wandered across the lands searching for answers until finally one day he stumbled on a small village. It was a tiny village lost in the sands of time. He called it La Maya and promised that some day he would make a name for himself though he lived a 1,000 or 10,000 years. His named was Ohelke. Time stood in his way and his story was lost in time and space.

One thing he did not understand nor ever did discover is that La Maya was the place he thought he had lost forever. Little did he know that he had been gone so long in the cursed land that history had erased all references. He had finally settled on the home where he was born. Lontiktik.

Lontit Konsessi loved the story and when she played it she often thought of herself as the hero. She loved the idea of exploration and wanted to discover truths for herself. Despite her disabilities and problems with certain things it actually made her sweeter then your average Laslava. The end result is she looked at things differently then anyone she had ever met.

Her friends often said she played the flute like an angel. It was impossible for her to play often though because she had to work so hard at one local pub called the Translata. The translata was a big pub for the day and had a seating capacity of around 50. There were always slow days but La Plaza de La Maya held the longest table in the world of that time. It was called a table but it was literally a brocaded transportation system called Mule Lines. Mule Lines were the biggest way to get products across the city. City as in 40,000 inhabitants.

There is probably no way to describe the exotic odors of such a large city. Lontit often made her way to her home a few blocks from the tavern where she worked. She had no problem navigating the warren of streets as she knew it better then her own hand. Her father and mother worked in the City Aarge or square as the best description I can think of. They both had jobs as longa's or the taste of the city. Its hard to describe jobs which don't exist today. Longa's were people who introduced Laslavas to the crowds of men who thronged the square looking for prosits. This was a normal practice of the day and prosits were an everyday fact of the Slave trade.

Her fathers named Was hlelhe and her mothers named was 2kel3 which is the best way I can describe it in English. The both lived in the warren of streets and walked to the Aarge. Though crime was rampant in many areas they were so well known that the LaSlava soldiers kept order among their own. These soldiers were extremely well disciplined and kept order with a iron truncheon called Labls or Lablse. It was about six feet long and could be used as a baton or a stick. There were times they were used indiscriminately among the 'heathen' as they were called and many of the LaSlava's were victims as well. The Soldiers were feared even among the high caste and were often offered the highest wages of any in the land.

Despite the fear they produced among the stats of the land or the general populace they were not generally cruel. But there was one man in particular who was. His named was Balss. He had a long history of breaking heads and hearts and liked to control people around him with his arrogant dislike for women. But he had one soft spot. And that was Lontit. He actually loved her despite her simplicity and encouraged her to play her flute for him whenever possible. This was an encouragement to Translata's owner #k2lk3.

Lontit had numerous friends besides Balss. Her best friend was her closest playmate 3k2lkkk. The name was built on a heirglyphic nature called Lakeke. It was the best way to describe names 40,000,000 years ago.

It was a simple time but not the best of times. Not many people knew there was trouble coming around the horizon. Oh sure, the local volcano's burped up quite often. But that wasn't the issue this time. No, it was invasion Martian style and the Amrerca's of the Martian race were ready to invade and they were coming to steal Lontit from all that she knew and loved.

Continued in a later issue.
